First Visits
What to Expect:
The initial allergy visit can take up to two
hours. At this visit, you will be asked to fill out registration forms and
history forms, and will then usually meet with the doctor to discuss what has
been bothering you and what next steps may be. Depending on your symptoms, we
may have you do a breathing test (spirometry) to see how the airflow is in your
lung and bronchial tubes, and may do allergy skin tests, which is why we ask
you to be off of antihistamines for at least 4-5 days as these may not be
accurate if antihistamines are in your system. Following the testing, you will
meet (again) with the doctor to review these test results, determine if any
other tests such as x-rays or blood tests are necessary, and to talk about how
to get you feeling better. This can include reviewing how to avoid substances
you may be allergic to or which may be exacerbating your symptoms, which
medications might be helpful and how best to use them, etc. A followup
appointment will usually be scheduled to evaluate if you are getting good
relief from this plan, and adjusting it if necessary.
